Gears Up With
Stereo From Stem To Stern.
This Baja Outlaw 30 gets audio
upgrades in the cabin, out on the cockpit plus rear-projecting
speakers.
We added a hardwired digital remote control
for the driver.
A second remote control was added on the transom.
The pre-level fader on the CD player fades between cabin
(front) and cockpit (rear). Just inside the cabin, on the
same side as the source unit and concealed in a locker, we
installed two line-level controls. The forward control operates
all the cockpit speakers while the aft control adjusts the
rear-projecting speakers. These three controls allow you
to independently adjust any zone to any circumstance.
We installed a six-disc changer in the same
cabin locker.
Concealed within the cabin we installed an
amplifier rack constructed with a white plastic laminated
over a birch panel. The rack contains the cockpit amp, the
cabin amp and power distribution blocks.
A JL Audio six-channel amplifier drives two
subwoofers, a combination of four coaxil and component speakers
plus two rear-firing speakers.
An Alpine amplifier operates in the three-channel
mode and drives two component speakers and a single sub in
the cabin.
On the supply side heavy
gauge primary cable is wired direct to the battery bank
and protected with a 150-amp DC breaker. The power and
ground cables are divided between the two amplifiers
with nickel-plated distribution blocks.
The cabin stereo features a pair of Polk Audio
component speakers which consist of two 6 1/2-inch midbass,
two I-inch dome tweeters and two outboard passive crossover
networks. A Polk MOMO 8-inch subwoofer is fit into a custom
front-loaded enclosure that conceals all mounting hardware.
The sub grill was dyed ‘graphite’ to match the
high-pass component speakers. A padded and vinyled bolster
dresses out the sub enclosure.
At the front of the cockpit, Clarion marine
separate components provide the majority of the sound.
Recessed in combing pockets at the rear of
the cockpit, Clarion marine coaxils are aimed at the occupants
of the rear bench seat.
We installed dual Clarion marine 10-inch subwoofers
in the locker under the rear bench. These free-air subs are
ideally matched to an infinite enclosure.
A set of birch baffle rings reinforce the factory
panel and provide the much-needed rigidity for good bass performance.
The birch rings are sealed with a ‘white’ finish
to match their surroundings.
Atop the rear portion of the deck cap and just
forward of the engine hatch we installed a pair of stainless
steel docking ports and two – conductor watertight plugs.
The self–contained rear-firing speakers are ready for
a quick install.
A pair of Boston Acoustics Voyagers install
in seconds without need of tools. When at anchor and rafting
off the transom those directional speakers deliver the sound
over a longer distance. When not in use these plug and play
Voyagers conveniently store away in a cabin locker.
