Whether at dock or at sea, separate
viewers can watch their favorite
satellite TV programs with unparallel access and control. |
Here’s the ultimate in marine satTV versatility
and convenience. A second satellite TV receiver is only a
few extra dollars a month so naturally boaters with children
would like to watch separate satellite channels simultaneously
on different TVs. This way the parents can watch sports, news
or a movie channel while the kids watch Disney or Toon. But
with five viewing locations (salon, cockpit, dock, master
stateroom and children’s cabin for example) there’s
not a best designation for each of the two satTV receivers.
EARMARK addresses the distribution issue by using a whole-boat
scheme that centralizes both satTV receivers and provides
viewing of both at all five TV locations. In other words,
every TV can access either of two identical satellite receivers
by simple channel selection. And best of all, each of the
five viewing locations has an identical wireless IR remote
and corresponding IR target that controls either receiver
without affecting the alternate receiver being used in another
area. This system is very simple to operate because it works
the same at every location without extra universal remotes
or different remotes.
Remote control over various centralized video sources can
be toggled through via a small manual switch to eliminate
common source interference (the same model of satTV receiver
for example). The switch can be concealed or placed anywhere
that is most convenient.
In a more comprehensive scheme, a row of mini dual-color
LED status indicators will allow the user at any viewing location
to monitor which video source is in current operation at any
other location as well as display which source is being addressed
by remote control at your own location. Manual remote control
selection can be replaced by a programmable IR router that
responds automatically. Once we’re in the realm of automation,
we can remotely command motorized volume controls zone by
zone, lighting, power up or down any AC or DC device or even
reveal and conceal an LCD screen via a motorized lift. |

In the salon the satellite TV receiver is concealed from view.
It is mounted to the top of the cabinet interior as to not consume
valuable storage area. An IR emitter covers the receiver’s
IR target. |

An IR target is placed over the DVD. The DVD target is covered
with an emitter which allows full DVD control from all five
viewing locations. |

IR target is smaller than a dime. |

The ship-to-shore antenna fixture was re-configured for
two BNC connectors and infrared control link. Converting from
F-connectors to BNC (a simple push and quarter-turn rotation)
allows convenient disconnect and re-connect in a tight space.
The infrared control link allows full satellite TV receiver
control from the dock TV. Twin coax is required for a dual
LNB dish and the two satTV receivers installed on the boat.
Each coax termination is color-coded. The ship-to-shore coax
carries bi-directional information. The satellite TV antenna
feed travels from boathouse to ship. Simultaneously the DVD
output, terrestrial broadcast and satellite TV receiver information
is multiplexed over the same coax cable and is directed from
the ship to the dock TV. |
 |
Outfitting
the slip with a pair of Boston Acoustics Voyager speakers
completes the boathouse entertainment package. A ship-to-shore
link and a transom remote control allows the dock speakers
to function as a patio extension of the boat’s stereo
without having a second source system.

The KVH TracVision 4 in-motion satellite TV antenna will allow
constant reception for two satTV receivers from anywhere on
the water. |

And, with a KVH TracVision 5, satellite TV can be enjoyed
by the entire family in their SUV on the way to and back from
the lake. |
